About Gene Yang Gene Yang has been teaching since 1998 and cartooning professionally since 1996. Gene has taught Computer Science, Computer Applications, Technology for Business, Computer Art, Algebra, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry at a Catholic high school in Northern California. He is currently serving as his school's Director of Information Services. In 1997, Gene's first comic book, Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, garnered a Xeric Grant, a prestigious comics industry award. Since then he has been published by Image Comics,Pauline Books and Media, and SLG Publishings. His 2006 book American Born Chinese was the first graphic novel to receive a National Book Award nomination and the first to win the American Library Association's Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award. His 2009 book The Eternal Smile, a collaborative project with Derek Kirk Kim, was recently nominated for an Eisner as well. Gene earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a minor in Creative Writing from the University of California, Berkeley and Master's degree in Education at California State University, East Bay. This site and Factoring with Mr. Yang were his final project for his Master's.
